Nashville Crab Apples What’s Going On With The Crab Apple Trees In Nashville Tennessee? If you’ve been asking yourself this same question, we have an answer for you. After speaking with our friends from the Tree Care Industry of America we have discovered that there may be a severe outbreak of crab apple diseases in. Two diseases are causing the Crab Apple tree to decline and defoliate, which are called cedar-apple rust and apple scab. Due to the low temperatures and high rainfall both fungal diseases are running rampant. The trees, if healthy to start, will likely refoliate in the spring, but with some care you might be able to beat this problem. As a fungal pathogen, the spores (seeds) will be in the leaf litter on the ground. Rake up and burn the fallen leaves from now until fall. If you remove the leaves on the ground then the spores won’t be able to germinate again in the spring. Then in the spring, we will need to spray a general fungicide right at bud break to prevent further infections. It will have to be done a couple of times for complete control.
