Cultivation vs. Natural Growth
Skillful gardening means finding the balance between the right amount of cultivation and the right amount of natural independence for your plants. As with a pet or a child, too much nurturing can sometimes do more harm than good. Just go down to your local nursery and you'll quickly be overwhelmed by the abundance of plant foods, fertilizers, and soil supplements. What do you actually need to be a successful gardener?
- Proper preparation of the soil can help reduce the need for chemical treatments later on. Begin by testing the Ph level of the soil. You can find inexpensive testing kits at any nursery or all-purpose store. The ideal range is between 6 and 7. Above 8 is too alkaline and may be lacking in nutrients; and below 6 can be too acidic. Read on the packaging of the plants you plan to cultivate about what type of soil they thrive in. Not all plants need the perfect Ph range. Some need more acid or alkalinity. Some tests will also show you the percentage of organic material in the soil. Instead of adding chemical fertilizers, research organic options such as chicken manure, compost, peat moss, pine needles, and other biodegradable choices. Some common nutrients helpful for gardening include: nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, boron, magnesium, sulfur, zinc, and iron. There are natural sources for all of these that are outlined in more detail.
- Choose plants that are native to your climate. This will decrease the amount of water needed as well as add nutrients to the soil.
- Just do the little things that show you care. There is a big difference between over-indulgence and gentle nurturing. You want to always be there for your plants without smothering them with attention. Consistently do the little things. Apply mulch to reduce weeds and keep roots moist. Try creating a compost pile. This not only recycles unwanted waste from your kitchen and yard, but your plants will thrive with this organic environment.
If you must use chemical fertilizers or nutritional supplements, try to use them as sparingly as possible and always research the most natural alternative available. You can defeat the whole purpose of growing your own healthy food if the plants are over-treated. For your landscape, the goal is to have as little maintenance as possible. Plants that require extensive cultivation will only add to your expense and place further demands on your time. Talk with a landscape specialist in your area to help you choose plants that will thrive and beautify your yard for years to come.
