One of the unique features of a Hinoki is the curved fan shaped leaves. The leaves of the Hinoki Cypress curve with the lighter coloration toward the outer edge of the plant and the darker color fading toward the center of the plant. This creates a great deal of depth to the visual feel of the plant.
The form most popular for Hinoki Cypress is Pyramidal. This triangular shape adds to the interest because there are gaps in the foliage and where the gaps are the color of the plant is darker. As you look up and down the plant your mind discovers a play between shape and color contrast that is very captivating.
