How to Create a Beautiful Garden Bed
Creating a garden bed takes planning and lots of prep work, but the pay off is the enjoyment you’ll receive for years to come. The photos here are from a project in Brentwood Tn where we did a 3d graphic landscape design for the client. We used 2 yards of compost in the beds.
Garden beds created for the front yard are more formal and public. Beds created for the backyard are more private and personal. Many exciting possibilities exist in creating a garden bed.
What type of garden bed do you want?
Do you want a formal garden bed or a rose bed? Do you want to grow perennials or a small cutting garden? Do you want to showcase your abundant fruits or vegetables? To create a casual look, plan a curved border and to create a formal look, use straight lines.
Adding garden beds can do wonders, the following included:
- Soften corners of your home.
- Make small yards seem larger
- Make large yards appear more enchanting or private
- Create hiding places with various beds – secret gardens
- Create focal points
Planning and Prepping
Make a list of what you’d like to achieve in your garden bed. Are you planning a garden bed that will create shade and privacy or edible delights?
Sun and shade need to be taken seriously when planning your garden or your end result will be wasted time, energy, and money. The pattern of sun and shade determines placement of every single plant. The pattern changes with the time of day, season, and growth of plants – use the sun and shade well and your garden will give you plenty of enjoyment through the years.
- Outline the perimeter of your garden bed using a garden hose on a curved bed and spray marking paint on any type of bed.
- Remove existing plants. If you have to remove grass or other plants, you’ll need to plan some digging time and possibly rent equipment. Removing sod is a joy. It burns calories and builds muscles. A square edged shovel, spade, or sod cutter does the trick.
- Test your soil. Garden centers sell soil test kits. It takes about 10 days to receive the results. The results tell you what you need to add to your soil before you plant.

- Till the soil. Dig up the dirt, flip it over, and break up the clumps. Repeat. Make sure you’re going down at least a foot.
- Amend the soil. Depending on what your plants will need and what your soil test results were you’ll need to add soil amendments: peat moss, sand, compost, manure, etc. Once your soil is healthy you can finish by raking smooth and leveling the soil.
- Edging for flower Beds
- Borders. Although a garden bed looks nice without borders, adding a border will help keep everything where it belongs (e.g., keep grass from creeping into the garden bed). It also makes mowing easier. Stone garden border.
Get to planting your garden bed
If you’re planting from pots then your job will be a bit easier. Before you remove the plants from their containers set the pots down in the desired spots. This is helpful for 2 reasons: spacing and aesthetic balance.
Plant each plant according to its instructions and water within the hour. If the plants roots are balled up you can use a basic kitchen knife or anything sharp to score some of the roots. Pull the dirt slightly away from the bottom of the plant’s base using your thumbs. This will free the roots to grow outward instead of into itself. Start from the back of the garden bed and work forward. After you dig the hole mix a little fertilizer in with the soil.
Build an easy to weed garden bed.
If you’re planting seeds make sure to add mulch. This will help conserve water and make your garden more attractive. A two-inch layer is adequate.
Maintain strong and healthy plants
Semiannual fertilizing is a must if you want strong healthy plants. Also, don’t forget to keep your soil healthy by adding necessary amendments. The Sunset garden book series such as Western Garden Problem Solver are great tools for guidance:.
