Perennial Garden Location and Shape
One of the most welcoming sights you can experience is a vivid array of flowers beckoning you home. While not everyone has a green thumb, creating a perennial garden is something that can be done with a little bit of research and work.
The first step is deciding the proper location for a perennial garden.
Many perennials like maximum exposure to sunlight, so try to choose a location that will receive many hours of sun each day.
In the summer, surrounding trees will have a maximum of foliage that could block some of the light your flowers will want to absorb. Counting on Mother Nature to water your perennials may sometimes be disappointing, so be sure to place your garden in an area that’s not too far from your house, in case you need to water it by hose.

On the other hand, if you experience a lot of precipitation, you’ll need to make sure that your garden has plenty of drainage. It’s good to dig out up to a foot of soil before mulching and planting your perennials, and as you do this, check the soil to see if it allows for good drainage. If not, consider putting down a layer of gravel under the garden soil to help excess water run away from the flowers’ roots.
Another consideration when creating a new perennial garden is its shape.
The most important factor when deciding upon the shape is the surrounding natural landscaping. The shape of your garden can follow the curve of your driveway or walkway or may take any shape that mimics or complements the natural slopes and shapes of your yard. Keep in mind that you’ll likely need to mow around the garden, so be sure to keep the shape simple and easy to access from all sides. A nice border around the garden will also help prevent mowing accidents from damaging any of your flowers.
Lastly, you’ll need to decide what to put into the garden. Choosing flowers is truly a matter of taste and style, but if deer are prominent plant predators in your area, find out from a local nursery which flowering plants won’t attract them. No matter which plants you opt for, keep proper spacing between the plants as perennials tend to grow and multiply over time and will thrive if given room, but will crowd each other if confined in too tight a space.
