When do I seed here in Middle Tn?

There are two seasons when seeding has the greatest possibility of giving you success.

* Fall -

Seed in Late Summer to Early Fall.

Once temperatures moderate some from the High Heat of Summer there will be a period of about 3 weeks of optimum seeding time. Grass seed needs warm temperatures and moisture to germinate. Once you see grass beginning to grow you still have a long way to go until you have a healthy lawn. You must water this newly germinated grass or it will dry out and die. Why go through all of the trouble to Aerate, seed, compost the seed , put straw on it, or what ever you cover it with only to let it die. Water your new grass for it to survive.

The cold days of winter will stunt the growth as soon as the first frosts hit. So time is limited.

* Spring -

Seed once you are confident that the last frost has happened. Your grass seed once again has only a window if you are not going to water. If you are going to water then I believe you can put down grass seed almost anytime until Mid Summer in Middle Tn Nashville area. Water is going to be the biggest problem. Water early and thoroughly allowing the ground to dry by evening. Too dry and you will kill or stunt the new grass, so monitoring your moisture is important. A few weeks of watering and Intense Summer Sunlight will help you have a great yard.
