Mulch is material layer used to trap moisture, help decrease weed presence, and improve soil in garden beds. While there are many varieties of mulch products on the market, the most popular by far is hardwood chip mulch. This product is made by using scraps from the lumber industry, processing them to a more regular size and shape, and dying them if necessary to reach the desired color.
Hardwood mulch shares many benefits with all mulch, while also having some unique aspects of its own. All mulch will provide a barrier between sunlight and the soil around your plants, producing a cooling effect and allowing for greater moisture retention. Hardwood mulch in particular, however, is one of the healthier mulches for nutrient absorption into the soil as it decomposes. It also screens light out more than other mulches, making weeds less common.
There are many varieties and colors of hardwood mulch available. Most clients of ours, as well as a large number of homes in the middle Tn area prefer using dark brown hardwood mulch. Another color option for houses on the more modern contemporary side is black mulch. This provides the most striking contrast available, and will pop against a white house. The final popular option is red hardwood mulch. It brings vibrant color to the bed under the plants, and works well to draw in the eye.
