What is an outdoor room?
An outdoor room is a modern outdoor living space on your property. Are you looking to spend more time in your backyard? An outdoor room may be just what you are looking for. Outdoor Rooms are areas that serve as a functional living space, but exist outdoors, rather than inside.
Outdoor Living Room Design Ideas
An outdoor room typically has some kind of roof or covering, like a pergola to keep things shady and cool in the warmer months, but not too closed off during more comfortable weather. You would likely use an outdoor kitchen to prepare everyday meals, or use for a cookout with family and friends. A fireplace or fire pit to warm up with loved ones under a starry sky in the fall and winter is frequently present. They tend to have a seat wall to provide a permanent gathering place for the family. Lighting is typically used to illuminate the space and keep it usable at any time of day or night. Any other hardscape or landscape features you would need to make you feel right at home outside in your backyard like a patio or walkway is necessary as well.
What can we build for you?
There are many permanent elements of an outdoor room that we provide for our clients. We build pergolas, seating walls, fireplaces, fire pits, lighting, privacy plantings, as well as outdoor kitchens and more.
Custom Outdoor Kitchen Installation
An outdoor kitchen is one of the major elements that turn a regular outdoor space into a usable and comfortable one. Being able to cook and spend time with family and friends gives life to the space in a way that not many other things can. Outdoor kitchens are typically comprised of a grill, counter space, a backsplash, and a cabinet. There are other inserts you could have as well, including a refrigerator, drawers, stove burners, and more.
Fire Pits
A fire pit is another useful tool to make your outdoor room feel more like home. From summertime bonfires to late winter nights keeping warm, a fire pit will always come in handy in your outdoor room.
Modern Backyard Pergola Design
If you’ve got a spot where you’d like to spend time more outdoors, but the sunlight is harsh and unforgiving, you’ve found the perfect spot to build a pergola. They tend to do better over a hardscaped area like a patio or deck, and are a great option for blocking out some light and precipitation, while not being entirely closed off.
Material Options
There are many kinds of pergolas, and they are not all created equal. Some are made of pine, others cedar, and still more are aluminum. What choice is right for you?
Pine
Pine pergolas are the least expensive option, and will get you a sturdy pergola on a smaller budget, however, pine will eventually warp in the heat and get eaten by the local insects.
Cedar
Cedar is naturally insect repellent, so it will not be damaged by insects nearly as much, and it won’t warp in our climate either. This is the material option most of our clients use.
Aluminum
The last option is aluminum. It will never be damaged by insects, or warp in the heat, however, it may draw in more heat if the metal is dark colored.
Seat wall
A seating wall can easily serve as a multi-functional tool in any outdoor room. It not only allows for people to gather on and around it, but it also solidifies a bold line within the mind of anyone in the space. Your attention will focus behind the seating wall, as well as what is on either side of it, this could function well in conjunction with a landscaping statement, or around a fire pit.
Materials
There are several materials we tend to use on our seating walls, two of which are very popular with our clients. The first is stone veneer, which looks like natural stone, but is actually a man-made product, and is the less expensive of the two. The second option is real natural stone, which is slightly more expensive, but has a true natural and organic form.
